The Game

An international soccer game is 90 minutes long. My soccer games are 30-minute halves. A high school game consists of 40-minute halves. That is how long a soccer game is. The rules are: no hands, the kicker taking the kickoff must not touch the ball until another player touches it. There are more rules, but if I tell you all of them, we will be here for a while. Here are some fun facts you may not know: there are 32 panels in a soccer ball, each one representing the 32 European countries. Soccer is known as football outside of North America. Brazil holds the record for the most World Cup wins, with five titles. A really fast goal in professional soccer was scored only 2.4 seconds after the kickoff. The longest soccer game ever lasted 108 hours; wow! That’s a lot of hours. The oldest male professional soccer player, who played as a goalkeeper, was 73 years old. Wow, that is so old.

The History

The oldest soccer clubs have been around since the 1800s. But some say that the game was created 2,000 years ago using a rubber ball. Others say a version of the game was played in China as far back as the 3rd century BC (before Christ). The fact is we’ll never know when soccer was invented. Early soccer leagues adopted the name football; that is why some people call soccer football. Records trace the origins of the sport back more than 2,000 years to ancient China, Greece, and Rome, where the ball was made of rock or stuffed with animal hair. The soccer ball changed over the years; they did not have all of the colors on it, just plain brown. That is some of the history of soccer.

Famous soccer players

Here are some famous soccer players and their accomplishments. First, we are going to start with Alex Morgan. Alex Morgan played as a striker; she prefers to take shots with her left foot. Alex Morgan is retiring. She was twice named U.S. Soccer’s Female Athlete of the Year. Alex Morgan is also a four-time CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football) Player of the Year. She is also a five-time FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 selection. She has won 2 World Cups and scored 123 goals in her entire career. Now off to another one of my favorites, Lionel Messi. Messi has scored 840 goals; that is a lot! Messi holds the records for the most European Golden Shoes (6), most goals for a single club (672, with Barcelona), most goals (474), hat-tricks (36), and assists (192) in La Liga, as well as most matches played (39), assists (18), and goal contributions (34) in the Copa América, where he played the most matches (26) and made significant goal contributions. He is the most decorated player in the history of professional soccer, having won 45 team trophies, including twelve league titles, four UEFA Champions Leagues, two Copa Américas, and one FIFA World Cup.

Positions and their jobs

Now we are going to talk about the positions and what the players do on the field. First is the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper has an important role in the game; they keep the ball out of the goal when the opposing team tries to get it in. Next, there is the sweeper, which is a defensive position. They are the last line of defense besides the goalie. Their job is to sweep the ball out if it has come to them. The sweeper does not really guard a player, nor do the other defenders. Next is what I play: the stopper, which is also a defensive position. The stopper does not guard a player because it is defense. The stopper is like the sweeper, just in front of the sweeper. The stopper is supposed to stop any balls that come near them. Next are the left and right defense; I am talking about these together because they are basically the same thing; one is on the right and one on the left. They primarily stop the ball if it comes to them. If the ball is on the other side of the field from the left or right player, they should only move to the middle of the field. That covers all of the defensive positions; now on to the offensive positions. First, the striker. There are usually two strikers on the field. Their main goal is to score in the goal. They can also use their teammates to help them. Now we have the midfielders. Not just the strikers do all of the scoring; the midfielders also take some shots at the goal. The midfielders are placed behind the strikers and help with both offense and defense. The midfielders also need to have great passing ability. Now for the left and right offense: the left and right offense is also known as wingers. Their positioning is just like the left and right defenders, but they are on offense. They can create assists (an assist is when you pass to a player, and then they score. Before the player scores, they can dribble around for as long as they want). Those are all of the positions.

Equipment

Now we are going to talk about the equipment. Some of the equipment protects players from injuries, like shin guards. First, let’s talk about shin guards. You can get them in almost any color you want. Soccer players wear shin guards because they do not want to get hurt; players kick at the ball, and if you are not wearing them, you could get kicked in your shin. Next, we are going to talk about gloves for the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper needs gloves for when the ball is shot at the net. If the goalkeeper does not wear gloves, the ball will smack the goalkeeper’s hands and it will hurt; that is why the goalkeeper needs gloves. Next, we are going to talk about cleats. Players need cleats; they cannot just wear regular shoes because cleats have spikes on the bottom, which give players better traction so they can run faster. Now we are going to talk about the soccer ball. There is not really anything to talk about, but I will still mention something. Here are some fun facts: In China, the first soccer ball was made from sewn clothing that was filled with rubber. In Europe during the Middle Ages, soccer balls were made from inflated pig bladders. The early soccer balls ranged from human heads, stitched-up clothes, and animal and human skulls to cow bladders. Those are some fun facts about the soccer ball.

Popularity

So how popular is soccer? Here are some facts. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world—yes, the WORLD. There are 3.5 BILLION fans and 265 MILLION players. Nobody knows when soccer was created, but the earliest versions of the game can be traced back 3,000 YEARS. In England, soccer was formed when several clubs established the Football Association about 150 years ago. Women started playing soccer around the same time that men did in England. However, originally men were the main players in the game. Women’s soccer started to become EXTREMELY popular in the 1990s. A very popular female soccer player, Mia Hamm, helped increase the popularity of soccer in the ’90s. Another factor in women’s soccer’s popularity was the U.S. Women’s National Team winning the 1999 Women’s World Cup. This led to the creation of the world’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Women’s United Soccer Association(WUSA). In 2022, 41% of Americans reported that soccer is their favorite sport to watch.

  1. You have a great blog post, and I never knew much about soccer until I read your post! I also never knew that the original soccer balls were just plain brown.
